In class we have been reading excerpts from The Book of Awesome, by Neil Pasricha, to help us learn how to write more descriptively. Like Joseph Conrad said in 1897, ” The power of written word is to make you hear, to make you feel…. it is above all else, to make you see.”

The following post is dedicated to all things Awesome. Please leave your awesome paragraphs here and feel free to comment on the comments left! Remember, if you can think of a positive suggestion to improve a piece, please tell the author kindly.

    Spring Crunching

Picture it. You are walking down the road on a cold spring morning. The snow has been melting and freezing, and melting and freezing day after day. Do you know what that means? It means ice-crunching fun! So you look down to the ground and there in front of you lies the largest patch of ready to crunch ice, the kind that is just waiting to be shattered with your winter boot into thousands of pieces. The excitement builds as you try to decide how to break it. Should you stomp it? Walk over it? Tap it with your toes? Wait, before you do anything, first you need to know the type of ice you’re dealing with, otherwise you might waste it.

There are many kinds of kinds of ice crunchers, but two of them are the easiest to explain. The thin, delicate ones, that breaks on the lightest of contact. Then there are the thick ones that need a good two- foot stomp to break. Remember, you need to know your ice before you start. So start studying up! But once you’ve started you just can’t stop! Before you know it you have walked a few blocks, smashing ice crunchers and haven’t even looked up once. Now you remember that horn blaring, how many cars almost ran you over? Better to stick to the sidewalks! The sound and feeling of a fresh ice-cruncher that no boot or car tire has touched is so delightful.

    Ice crunching in the spring………?

    Awesome!

      My Favourite Place

My favourite place to be is my home. My home is relaxing and warm. I remember the day our family got our very own dog. The sun was shining bright, the birds were chirping in the trees (not sure what birds they were), and it was really warm. Our dog was a very bushy Lab, it was big and black, similar to a bear, and it was so tall, it stood up to about the middle of my torso. Our dog wasn’t vicious, but instead more like a big teddy bear. I was so happy to have our very own dog; I couldn’t even leave it alone for more than an hour. I just kept petting it every 10 minutes or so. Timmy really is a good dog. Awesome.

    My favorite place

My favorite place is a beach in Bahamas with me and my parents sitting on the warm sand. The sand was warm but the ocean was cold like when you’re in a hot tub and you jump into the pool but the ocean was so clear. It was fun, relaxing, and a joyous time. Also it was so hot. I recalled doing my best gymnastics doing cartwheels, handstands on the warm sand my hands just sank in like the water. The sun was glistering of my pale skin until a couple days later I was burnt like a lobster. Also riding the dolphin it felt like wet rubber and the dolphin waved his fin at me I was so happy I loved riding the dolphin that was my biggest dream but we had to go back to the resort it was a sentimental day it was awesome.

My favourite place to be in the winter months is my room. As I walk in I instantly feel the warm air brush against my face. It’s my room so my rules not like school. When I come home I instantly go up to my room, jump my bed, relax and play video games. I remember this memory forever when I hit my first trickshot in Call of duty. Taking a moment to change my expression from calm to amazing to OMG!!! . After I hit it I drop my scuff controller and scream. Feeling that moment of amazing, awesomeness then I noticed my goal I have accomplish and will remember forever.

    My room.

    Awesome. 🙂

    C.N. Tower, Toronto

My favourite place is a cement tower with glass floors in Toronto. Can you guess what it is? It’s the C.N. tower. It’s a peaceful night in winter, those nights when you feel like your toes are going to fall off. I don’t know about you, but I find those nights in the C.N. tower relaxing, soothing, and calming. Just thinking of being in the C.N. tower on cold night gives me chills. I remember pretending that I was flying in the air with my brother, Hunter. I also remember trying to lift up the C.N. tower like Superman! At the end of the day, when I had to go to bed a 7:30, my dad would put me on his shoulder so I can see the night before my family and I go back to the hotel. Oh, how fun that was! I loved how the cold wind at bright moon struck my face. Then, always at the end of the day, I got carried back to the hotel and into the nice, warm bed. When I woke up in the early morning, my family and I were going back to the C.N. tower! I slid my hand against the cold C.N. tower after that freezing night, that amazing feeling felt awesome. When the sky is still dark blue and the shining, bright lights are just lying on the quiet, peaceful road. You let out a light huff and a small breath cloud floats in front of your face. That… Is… Awesome.

My favorite place is my camp. It is a hot, bright and woodland place there. It is also a nice relaxing, calm, warm, and sunny place. One of the days I was there I saw a doe and her fawns sleeping across from my tent in the beginning of the forest. The doe woke up and saw me, so she woke up her babies and they all ran away, but before the babies ran away I got to see one of them. They were tan coloured with white, tiny spots. I also saw the sun wake up the world for a new day.

    Awesome

    My Bedroom

My bedroom is my place of comfort. It’s quiet, relaxing, and best of all, it’s mine. I remember when my dog scurried under my blankets, eager to roll in my sheets and play with my toes. I was drinking hot chocolate. Rich and creamy with big, puffy, ooey, gooey marshmallows. I was on my pillow. It felt like a soft white cloud floating in the breeze. Those nights just lying in my room, thinking of what’s to come. No one and nothing can disturb the peace and freedom I feel in there. In my bedroom I can do anything I want. Whether it’s on my iPad, calling a friend, reading a novel, or wrestling with my dog, I have the power to do what I want, when I want. My bedroom is my place of comfort.

    My favourite place

My favourite place is when I go to camp and I sit down with my small, old, blue fishing rod and I relax on my massive smooth rock. I enjoy looking along the lake watching the birds fly and geese swim in the water. I love how the lake has a rainbow showing in the water from the sun reflecting off it. I cast out my fishing rod and wait. I watch the lake until I feel a pull or a tug then I yank back to set the hook. When I catch a fish I smile. I try to catch small fish to keep as a pet and the big fish and we fillet it for super. When I walk back to the to camp I love when my family smiles at me bringing dinner.

My gaming room is tiny and colourful and diversion. Its door is small too its really cool. My ps3 and Xbox are in my gaming room. When I feel my controller I feel free to do cool things in grand theft auto five. I feel relaxed except when I die in call of duty black ops 2 it makes me frustrated. I like my room with my ps3 its fun it has a massive TV I play lots of games, mostly grand theft auto five and call of duty black ops 2. my room has a flame design all around the room its orange and blue. I also have a modified controller its gold chrome with orange analog sticks. My ps3 has a grand theft auto five case it goes all around my ps3 its awesome.

    My favorite place

Ah! The most favorite place to be is your bed at night, where everyone starts to sleep. It’s the most cozy, warm, and comfortable place in the whole wide world. You know how you feel when you take that first step to the bedroom, you feel woozy, and sleepy. When you collapse on your bed, you feel like you never want to move from that exact spot, but, what about the blanket that is so far away. You don’t feel like getting up and hope that someone comes in and magically put that blanket on you. And then, your mom comes in to put that blanket on you, you are a lucky. It almost feels like you’re hibernating for 8 hours. There’s one more problem though what if you forgot to go to the bathroom? You can’t hold it in, also you don’t want to lose that spot, and you try, and try until you finally give in and go. Now you’ve lost your cozy, comfortable spot, but you still fell asleep.
    Awesome. 🙂

    My Favourite Place

My favourite place is the beautiful, sunny beach back in California. The afternoons there are calm and sunny and the summer air hits your nose as you start running to the water. My first memory at the beach was when I was nine. I was friend, we were running along the golden sand collecting the shiny little sand crabs that were hiding under the cool, wet sand. I remember the waves lifting us up like a mother does when she sees her newborn baby, I still hear the sea gulls calling out to us saying “summer is here!” The water was like crystals and glowing treasure, the fishes were my favourite part. They reflected off the light and made the water gleam. But then the sun goes down, and the brightness of the moon comes and ends your day at the beach. AWSOME!!!

My favorite place to be in is my room. I feel relaxed, happy, and calm because its peaceful in my room. Every time I get up I grab something to eat then I watch T.V. in my room, then I play my Xbox for awhile. My favorite memory that I had is this blue/green chair with a cup holder. My room is kinda big and it’s blue and red. My cousin and I would play on my Xbox all the time when he comes over. I like sharing my room with my cousin and brother. Most of these memories are from the summer mornings.

    My Favourite Place

My favourite place would be Camp Crystal Beach, when I’m outside, enjoying nature with my family.

Mornings at camp are peaceful. Sun reflecting off the bone chilling glass on the window. My favourite time of the day is breakfast. The smell of the bacon, eggs and toast is amazing. I crave the delicious smell, almost as much as I crave the taste.

As I crawl slowly into the lake on the beach, I feel very relaxed and calm. As the water gently sparkles on my skin, I brush my soft fingers through my silky, smooth hair. My eyes match the bright, blue colour of the lake, and a sense of relief comes over me as I peer at the Evergreen trees around me.

Boat rides on the lake were amazing! I remember on a motor boat ride, how much fun it was to explore the beautiful island around me. Also, I loved going on canoe rides. They were very quiet, and peaceful, as my soft little hand drift across the top of the crystal clear water, and watch little ducks float upon the silent lake.

I feel the warm comforting, sun on my cheekbones as it glistens over my pale white skin. As the evening sets in, my feet are cold from the breeze of the wooden deck. Walking along the dirt trail, feeling the warm summer breeze as you watch the moisture of of the air sparkle on the leaves of the trees. Looking at the beautiful , dark lake was priceless. Watching little ducklings and insects float on the top of the quiet, deep lake.

As we settle into night, the fire begins to heat up, sending sparks across the pitch black sky. As the heat touches your face, the fire is reflecting off your eyes. You move back, but you move back up again. The heat causing your eyes to water drives you mad, but you don’t mind, at all

My favourite place to be in the summer is at Canada’s Wonderland having fun with my family. We go on the Leviathan and the Behemoth and have a lot of fun playing minigames. My mom and dad have a great time after a long day at Canada’s Wonderland. It was the best summer vacation ever. I love eating the popcorn from those little red and white bags. The food was tasty and that will be remembered forever. The date was July 16, 2013 and it was so warm. There were more than 50 rides and the food was beyond good, it was awesome. The most recommended ride would be the Behemoth. When you put the food in your mouth it tickles your taste buds and makes your mouth water so much, even from the sight of it.
