THE BOOK OF AWESOME

Posted on

In class we have been reading excerpts from The Book of Awesome, by Neil Pasricha, to help us learn how to write more descriptively. Like Joseph Conrad said in 1897, ” The power of written word is to make you hear, to make you feel…. it is above all else, to make you see.”

The following post is dedicated to all things Awesome. Please leave your awesome paragraphs here and feel free to comment on the comments left! Remember, if you can think of a positive suggestion to improve a piece, please tell the author kindly.

    Spring Crunching

Picture it. You are walking down the road on a cold spring morning. The snow has been melting and freezing, and melting and freezing day after day. Do you know what that means? It means ice-crunching fun! So you look down to the ground and there in front of you lies the largest patch of ready to crunch ice, the kind that is just waiting to be shattered with your winter boot into thousands of pieces. The excitement builds as you try to decide how to break it. Should you stomp it? Walk over it? Tap it with your toes? Wait, before you do anything, first you need to know the type of ice you’re dealing with, otherwise you might waste it.

There are many kinds of kinds of ice crunchers, but two of them are the easiest to explain. The thin, delicate ones, that breaks on the lightest of contact. Then there are the thick ones that need a good two- foot stomp to break. Remember, you need to know your ice before you start. So start studying up! But once you’ve started you just can’t stop! Before you know it you have walked a few blocks, smashing ice crunchers and haven’t even looked up once. Now you remember that horn blaring, how many cars almost ran you over? Better to stick to the sidewalks! The sound and feeling of a fresh ice-cruncher that no boot or car tire has touched is so delightful.

    Ice crunching in the spring!

    Awesome!

      Hi Mr. Purdon,

Your writing is very good because it felt like we were in the piece because you asked us questions which made us think. We also liked that you added some of your own ideas to an already fabulous piece that your lovely wife wrote! Did you tell your students that it was a “bumped up” piece?
We also think that you need to work on the second last line because it doesn’t really make sense to us.

      Love,

Mrs. Purdon….. you should be using your email address and not mine!

I wrote another to redeem myself. Here it is:

Is there anything better than witnessing the sun rise or set? I don’t think so. There is nothing that I can think of that is quite as special then unexpectedly realizing the sun is rising or setting. It’s not like it should be a surprise, it happens everyday and has been happening for billions of years, yet it often sneaks up on us. It could be when we are driving to work or coming home, while on a vacation, because our timelines are out of sync. It sometimes happens at work. For me, one of the best ever was when I was night skiing with Sam in the spring. We had started skiing at twilight when we got off the chair lift and saw the most spectacular sunset ever from the top of a mountain.

I think what makes a sunrise or sunset so special are the colours! Not every sunrise or sunset takes our breath away. No, you need those perfect conditions of high wispy clouds in the foreground or that bank of low clouds on the horizon. It is then that shades of pink, red and orange appear like those we’ve never witnessed before. Our jaws drop and we really see this event like we haven’t before.

To me the most awesome thing about a good sunrise or sunset is the sense of peace it brings. Why does the world seem to stop or slow down? Why do we temporarily forget about our troubles? Why are we lost in its beauty? Simply, because we see that nature is more powerful, larger, and more beautiful than we thought possible. We sense that we are part of this planet, yet truly understand how small and insignificant we are within it! We realize that this will be happening long after we leave and just simply enjoy the moment.

        Sunrise and sunsets.

        Awesome!

    SAND.
Take off your socks and enjoy the walk! Let your feet sink in, the soft cool sand. The hot sunny day. The gentle smooth sand makes no sound at all. The sand rustling through your toes and dropping on the ground like it’s in a rush.

You are leaving the beach, sadly. But you turn extremely happy when you learn that you will be going back there tomorrow.

    Reading a Good Book

At one point in everyone’s lives, they’ve got to have read a good book. Think of that time where you have finally got a day off of school, and after you’ve finished all of your homework and chores, you dash to your room, get a stool to reach your bookshelf, and grab that book you’ve wanted to read so badly but haven’t had the time for. You hurry to your favorite spot to lie in and quietly begin to read. The first few lines have got you excited, even though there’s not much action yet.

You’ve just finished the book. What fun that was, you think. You put the book back on the shelf, satisfied. You smile as you exit your room, knowing that you will most definitely read it again.

Reading a book you’ve been waiting for.

    Awesome!

    Rolling Up The Rim

Is there anything better than having no patience? So you gulp that coffee as FAST as possible. Why? So you can ROLL UP THE RIM, but then you have to go to the washroom, because you just drank an extra large English toffee coffee. Now you don’t feel that well. Unfortunately, when you get back from your break, someone has rolled up your rim. Your mom is grinning from cheek to cheek because you won a new car.

Rolling Up the Rim to Win!

We’ve all been there, you wake up on Christmas day and it doesn’t feel like Christmas. But the second you step into the room where your tree stands tall and proud, you feel the Christmas spirit racing through your body.
While your family gets the camera and rushes for the presents you sit down and enjoy that sweet smell of pine. The presents don’ even matter at this point. You just sit there, and relax.
If you are one of the families that gets a fake tree for Christmas, I feel bad for you. You will never be able to smell your Christmas tree without a stuffy nose.

The smell of pine on Christmas.

Who doesn’t like rollercoaster’s and the rush of adrenaline when you do ride a rollercoaster? Well most people.

Imagine this, going to an amusement park to go ride a colossal rollercoaster. You’re very excited. You get in the coaster and start going real high….put up your hands you’re about to go down intensely fast. Then come the spirals, loops. Until the ride is over.

When you get off you feel all dizzy!!!!!!!!

Imagine it; you are dancing wildly to a song with a crazy beat. Your arms and legs are flailing everywhere you almost hit some person you don’t even know in the face without realizing it. There’s that rush of energy and you don’t want to stop. You dance like no one else is there, like nobody can see you.
You head over to the drink stand and grab a drink for more energy. Once you finish you shuffle back over to your spot. Suddenly you realize it. The music stopped and everyone is staring at you.

Don’t you love the sight of your towering 2 ft. cake? Who doesn’t? Just imagine your blind folded, your friends singing “Happy Birthday to you,” You smell the brownies covered in chocolate sauce with bulk chocolate surrounding the outside. You hear the plate “clink” on the table in front of you. A kid rips of your blindfold to reveal the large 2 ft. cake of chocolaty goodness you were dreaming of all day long. When you cut it with the knife, chocolate sauce pours out. You grab a handful and shove it in your mouth.

    Fall Leaves

So it’s just about the end of autumn. All of the leaves have fallen off of the trees and have already dried up. Put on you’re those shoes you got ant the beginning of the school year, slide on you’re jacket and glove, then run outside to step on the leaves.

When you step on them, you hear that delightful crushing noise and you faintly feel it under you’re feet, the leaves shattering into hundreds. Not only does demolishing the leaves look, feel, and sound good; it also smells good. So go ahead, that of whiff on what nature has to offer and enjoy it.

The sound of walking through old leaves.

Just listening to that sound of cheering birds makes me want to get outside quick and watch birds as they fly throw the air looking for morning breakfast as they watch you from above. As they fly throw the air looking for bugs to eat and crunch on.

Think about it. You are left alone in the dark cage called your room right after you come back from school with a new babysitter, and your new babysitter make a good joke like “At least you won’t have me stopping you from spending your day on the computer.” That must have happened at least once in an average 12 year old’s life, but not necessarily with a babysitter, but it can also happen when a couple of guests leave, they are really nice, but their kids are very annoying. As soon as the guests leave you feel sad because now you have to go to your usual boring day, and then your mom see you and says “At least you want have to put up with that whining, and cleaning up a mess every time they make one which is awfully fast for 2 7 year olds.” and after that you usually laugh like you have just seen Barrack Obama farting in the middle of a speech. The amount of happiness you usually get after a person make a funny joke when you are feeling depressed.

    Awesome!

Brain freeze, the feeling when you eat a lot of ice cream and you cant stop until you get this feeling when you head starts to freezing. Also when you drink really cold water and you can’t feel your face because it is so cold. Or when you put your head in snow it kind of makes your body shiver and you can’t stop shivering.

There are two other ways you can get brain freeze and one is drinking a lot of pop where the fizzy bubbles and it goes throw the wrong tube into your head and it starts hurting. The other way to get brain freeze is your ears freezing out side in the cold with out a hat on……really cold.

Silent farting, did you ever sit beside you brother or sister and you had to fart, you should just let it out sometimes they will stink like rotten eggs or sometimes it will smell like the dinner you had the night before. Lots of people will breathe in and they will smell something nasty but they don’t want to say anything or sometimes you will be on a road trip and you just had to let it out… well let me tell you something just let it out.

There are two ways that people will react to you fart one way is people will think that they have to go thro up and another one is that people will just want to burst out laughing but they don’t want to do that because it might be rude to others. Well let me say just do what you have to do.

    Silent farting,

Jumping Into a Lake in the Summer

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be absolutely drenched in icky, sticky sweat that isn’t helping you cool off. And then all of a sudden becoming so cold that you can’t feel your toes? Well, then you are just the person that I want to talk to!

Imagine the adult that is looking after you tells you to go outside because it was such a ‘beautiful’ summer day. If that ever happens to you, jump into a lake. (only if you are at camp.) If you are not at camp, then I can’t help you. It feels so nice to have the water droplets slowly start to trickle off of you as you re-surface the lake. Even when your toes are just hitting the water, you can feel the cold go up your spine. If that isn’t the perfect summer activity, then I don’t know what is.

Don’t you like when you’re having a nice hot shower? Four rules to having an awesome shower. First, make the water real hot so the soap’s coldness does not beat the hot water. Enjoy it as much as you can. It does not last forever. Put the best shampoo on your hair and wash. It goes all over your body and feels gorgeous. Tell your family not to turn on any water. You don’t want cold water.

Remember that first time you bought a McFlurry from McDonalds? Rmember that first bite when it melts in your mouth. All of the ice ream melts. It is so, so creamy and dreamy. In each bite it is like there is a party in your mouth. The smarties give it a little more flavour. They also make it sweet and delicious.

    Awesome.

    My second awesome:

    Watching a Marshmallow Burn

Have you ever been roasting a marshmallow and then you see it slowly start to slide off of your roasting stick? You can’t do anything about it because it is already starting to heat up and you don’t want to burn yourself. The only thing you can do is watch it fall down in slow motion. Going, going, and… gone.

It starts to turn a golden- brown and at that moment you are wishing that you could go back in time and risk getting burned for that perfect, delicious marshmallow, now mocking you for not saving it while you still had the chance.

It is now burned so bad that it is black. You can imagine that you are that marshmallow burning in the fire, and you are glad to have a human mother and a human father. You only have one more task to accomplish before the marshmallow becomes nothing. Go ahead, you know you want to. Poke it with your roasting stick.

    Watching a marshmallow burn.

    AWESOME!

    Rollercoaster’s

Who doesn’t love rollercoasters and the adrenaline rushing through your body when you do. Well most people. But the boring part is waiting in line. Just waiting for like an hour in line is so boring and a waste of time, but you’re doing it for the fun of riding an AWESOME rollercoaster! So just wait in line!

As the line gets closer you feel excitement in your head as you get closer and closer until you are at the first spot in the line. Then, you get in the coaster then you here click, click, and click until you go speeding down…… at like 100 mph down a steep AWESOME plunge to greatness and more AWESOME. After the plunge of greatness you go speeding to the loops of pure THRILL.
Then….you see your whole world flip like a reflection you feel like puking but you shouldn’t so you hold it in. Finally, comes the Spirals of Flabbergasting fun. Again, you feel like puking but you don’t. After that, the ride is over.

When you get off you feel all dizzy, and then….. you finally puke. All the food you ate today is almost everywhere! There goes your days lunch.

    AWESOME!!!!

It’s Wednesday morning, the grade three test is today. You tell your mom you do not want to go. You’re trying to fake sick…but when you open the door…Yah! Snow Day!
    Snow Days,
    Awesome

There are four rules to having an awesome birthday. First rule, choose the biggest cake. Second, make sure 20 people come to your party. Third, have it at your house. Fourth, go CRAZY!

    Christmas morning
Waking up on Christmas morning feels like your school is going to explode and candy is going to spill out like a piñata.

It feels so exciting. You go down stairs and the cracking sound of the stairs will give you goose bumps and the floor is so cold like you seeped the night out side.

I’m at the bottom of the stairs and under the tree there are a lot of presents.

    Christmas morning
Waking up on Christmas morning feels like your school is going to explode like candy is going to spill out of a piñata or a broken candy machine even like on Halloween.

It feels so exciting. You go down stairs and the cracking sound of the stairs will give you goose bumps and the floor is so cold like you slept the night outside.

When you get to the bottom of the stairs you see under the tree there are a lot of presents. It will feel like you are going to cry with joy and happiness. Christmas morning,

    Mystery gift from your parents

Picture this you waking up in the morning at like 11:45 am in the morning and waking up to your parents giving you a gift for now reason so you open it up and find out that it is a video game you always wanted so bad so your parents magically buy you a video game that you didn’t tell them anything about it is like they can read mind’s so anyways back to the topic so you look at the number of players you see that your whole family can play that exact video game that they just bought you so you ask them questions like how did you know that this is my favourite video game of all time. And so your parents say that they just know for somehow that it was your favourite of all time. So you say hey mom and dad can I go down stairs and play this game but you’re not just asking quietly your jumping up and down up and down because not only you’re so excited because of this your also excited because the first day that they buy it they agree to you playing this video game the first few hours that they bought it. So you run down your steps so quick that you fall but gets up right away with no tears dropping down your face you sprint to your system to play on and it turns out that you are actually beating and love this video game of some sort so you thank your parents for buying you this awesome video game…
