Divergent

Posted on

Well it seems that we have some interest in Divergent. Adam and Aleia have made the suggestion that this might be a good discussion thread. I also think this is a good topic.

So lets use this thread to discuss the plot and characters, pose questions to others, make predictions, etc.

So….. What do you have to say about Divergent, by Veronica Roth?

Well, since everyone seems hesitant to start this thread, I’ll weigh in with some of my thoughts. I can’t say I’ve been that impressed with Divergent thus far. It seems to be more hype than substance. The character Tris has yet to suck me in, nor has the storyline. I will admit that the idea surrounding the story is great. I love distopian themes, especially one that evolves around the city of Chicago, but this novel better hurry up and get better! I’m starting to think it is no fault of the subject, rather the author. Veronica Roth hasn’t really found a way to hook me. I think it is because she hasn’t sold me on Tris yet. Blood Red Road and Hunger Games seem to have ruined Divergents ability to impress me.

@Mr. Purdon. We haven’t gotten far into Divergent yet, and right now it is trying to build up to a main event. You can’t just make a story and not describe the setting or characters because then we as the readers would have no idea of what’s going on. We were going to get rid of Blood Red Road at one point, but then the brother was taken away and the journey started.

I have to agree with you somewhat. However, I need to be pulled into a book immediately to be happy.

I love this book so far, i like the idea about Four being against Eric, but i dont like the idea about all the sudden paint ball coming into this situation. It makes some sence because its a dontless tradition, but its a weird idea. another thing i like about this book is, the idea that they are being locked in, and not keeping something out.

    Rose said:

Well, I like the book divergent so far it seems like the groups are sounding like actual groups e.g. Popular, Nerdy, Goth. The group that Tris is in seems Goth. The whole idea is really good but the way she wrote it, I’m not too sure about that.

      Mr. Purdon responded:

Well, I agree with Mr. Purdon, it hasn’t wowed me yet. If I were to say, I’m bored with it. But I do hope it will start to interest me sooner or later. But that’s not all I wanted to talk about, I can see that Triss is still Agnation in heart. Dauntless is going to be hard for her to be, even though she did join them, and is now one. She still has the sweet side of caring for others, like when Christina was hanging from the edge and she wanted to help her. Then again, she was all ways caring for herself not like Agnation more like Divergent who she really is. I do think it did get me going for a while, when the test results were Divergent and she told her NOT to tell any one. It was suspicious!!!

    Shaynah said:
    February 3, 2012 at 9:00 am

Well, what I have to say about Divergent is that it’s an interesting book so far but not as interesting as Blood red road. When we read the first page of Divergent,it didn’t quite interest me the way Blood red road did. When we read blood red road, every single page we read interested me more and more. It’s not that it is not a good book, because it is,it’s just that it’s not as interesting as Blood red road. But the thing that interests me most,is violence. It’s because if I hear that there is violence
in a book,I alway’s want to know how the story leads to violence. In Divergent and Blood red road,
both books have very interesting, good characters. But I’d prefer Blood Red Road.

      Mr. Purdon responded:
      February 3, 2012 at 9:02 am

Why is it that we all want a book or movie with violence? Is that right? Strange.

Hey, does anyone have a prediction about where Tris will rank after the initiation process?

      Gemma said:
      February 3, 2012 at 9:36 am

It depends on whether Four decides who stays, or if Eric decides. I think that, without a doubt, Four would let Tris stay and rank her higher than she deserves but, Tris, at the moment, is on Eric’s bad side, so he would probably give her a low ranking. Four’s opinion is bias for obvoius reasons, and Eric’s opinion is NOT fair, so it all depends on who chooses. I don’t think it’s fair that they are ranking those people in the first place, but that’s what makes the story interesting! 🙂

I am actually enjoying this book. I like the plot, I like the characters, and I like the way there are multiple stories intertwining with eachother. Four and Tris’s supposed feelings for eachother, Eric and Four’s ongoing dispute, training troubles, they all seem to work together in some sort of odd way.

I happen to enjoy this book. No, Veronica Roth hasn’t exactly hooked me onto Tris, but the *mental images* that she’s created is certainly catching my attention. I think Tris definitely has the potation to be the Katniss and Saba that everyone would like, but we’re still at the beginning of the book. She could pop out at anytime. Besides, she already made a big jump by going into Dauntless, and climbing up the ladder of the ferris wheel. I couldn’t do it. And even Four was scared, so that must say something about Tris. I personally don’t like how Veronica Roth is playing out the relationship of Four and Tris. She’s leaving s hanging there and it’s bothering me. I’m a sucker for romance so… But I still like the book.

      Mr. Purdon responded:

I agree with you Mr. Purdon. Well I think divergent was not that interesting. I like Blood Red Road more. However I think Tris is going to be half factionless and half dauntless because the title of the book and the picture of the fire made me feel that she is dauntless and factionless .

    Zachery said:
    February 3, 2012 at 9:33 am

I thought this book was a little weird at first but now it seems like it is pulling up it’s game. But the thing i find weird is how tris wanted to go to divergent but it seems now that she dosnt want to be in the divergent faction.

In my opinion I think this book will start to get better and better over time as we read. Look at Blood Red Road. It started off really slow and boring and we were going to get rid of it, but then when the Saba’s brother was taken away we couldn’t stop reading. If we give the book some more time it may turn out to be a great distopian story like Blood Read Road.
