I’m not sure what I should think about renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. We live in Canada, and we’re used to living well. We are rich. Our electricity is almost always on, and I don’t remember a time when I couldn’t heat my house. I like driving my car to the store instead of walking. I love flying to other countries where I can see strange and interesting things. Without non-renewable resources (gas, oil, coal) I couldn’t afford to do any of those things.
BUT…. what about the future? What about all the pollution that burning coal and gas makes? Will we really be out of gas and coal in 100 years? If so, then the children of the students in Mr. Purdon’s class might not be able to travel unless they figure out how to make cars and airplanes go using renewable sources of energy. Maybe I should care about the future. Maybe I should be willing to pay more now so that my children’s children can continue to enjoy Canada the way I do. But I won’t be here, so maybe it doesn’t matter.
What do you think? Should we keep going as we are, relying on the non-renewable sources of energy, or should we think about the future?
