Renewable and Non-renewable Resources

Posted on Updated on

I’m not sure what I should think about renewable and non-renewable sources of energy.  We live in Canada, and we’re used to living well.  We are rich.  Our electricity is almost always on, and I don’t remember a time when I couldn’t heat my house.  I like driving my car to the store instead of walking.  I love flying to other countries where I can see strange and interesting things.  Without non-renewable resources (gas, oil, coal) I couldn’t afford to do any of those things.

BUT…. what about the future?  What about all the pollution that burning coal and gas makes?  Will we really be out of gas and coal in 100 years? If so, then the children of the students in Mr. Purdon’s class might not be able to travel unless they figure out how to make cars and airplanes go using renewable sources of energy.  Maybe I should care about the future.  Maybe I should be willing to pay more now so that my children’s children can continue to enjoy Canada the way I do.  But I won’t be here, so maybe it doesn’t matter.

What do you think?  Should we keep going as we are, relying on the non-renewable sources of energy, or should we think about the future?

i think we should think about the future and think about the others in the future and let them live like us and have what we have today.

It sounds like your head knows what you believe. BUT what do you think you have to change today so that your kids can keep enjoying Canada? It’s not enough to know what we believe. We need to figure out specific things that we can do today to change the future.

It is great that you want to work at saving the world. Have you ever used anything that runs off of the sun’s energy or wind energy? I wonder how we can start doing this?

I think that we should take our future into consideration because it’s our future. If any of us are to have children when we get older, we should want them to feel safe and comfortable in their country. Maybe we should have kind of a half-and-half thing where we keep doing what we’re doing by using the non-removable resources, but also use more renewable ones. We’d still use gas, we’d still use coal, and we’d still use oil, but we’d also be using the renewable stuff.

There must be some things you can do today, even if you are a kid. Do you think you can affect the future by trying to conserve energy today? You can turn off lights, and make sure your parents don’t sit in the running car waiting for you. What about talking to your parents about it at supper and asking them what they think. Kids have power and can change the world too!

I think that we should start caring about our future. I don’t think that it matters whether we are alive or dead, we surely won’t be affected by the shortage of these fossil fuels. Although we won’t be around, our possible future children might be affected. We should make cars and automobiles that run on renewable energy sources. We should heat our houses with renewable energy sources, too. Sure, it will cost more, and possibly have some downsides, but the path we are taking has a big consequence. As a kid, I can’t do much about the way people are heating houses and fueling cars, but I will do something about it when I can.

I think we should think about the future because if we don’t we will run out of gas. So we should try to make renewable gas and oil. We should also make oil and gas so we can cook on fire and on the ovens

Interesting. Did you know that some people are trying to figure out how we can run cars off of hydrogen, which is renewable? They are just figuring it out. Look it up on the internet at home. Maybe when you grow up you will be one of the scientists that work on discovering new sources of fuel.

I think that we should help the world because it will help kids and people see the world better and yes we also should think about the future because when we help the world it will make us people and that we will be better people in the future…Because if people are still hurting plants then they will know that they are bad people hurting environment.

I agree. If we plant trees at the same rate we cut them down, and leave time for them to grow it is called a renewable resource. It is only if we cut them down faster then we plant new trees that it is bad for the environment. It is too bad the pulp and paper mill in Thunder Bay was shut down.

i think we shoul think about the future because its not that fair if we use all the non renewable resources and then in the future might not have all that non renewable resources. also because there are renewable resources that we can use that will help with the same things like soloar power cars and trucks. we can also use plants to make all sorts of things.

You are suggesting a different idea then your classmates. You are saying, if we use less non-renewable resources they will last longer and then our children will still have gas and oil to run things. Good thinking. How do you think we can cut back on using coal, gas and oil?

I think we should think about the future because when we are older we will have children they would have a good life and they will have heat and transportation. If I had to think of the future I probably wouldn’t like it because I wouldn’t know if there was heat or transportation that’s why I think we should keep going as we are.

Well, I think that we should think of the future instead of relying on non-renewable sources of energy because if we keep using non-renewable sources of energy, the children that I might have probably won’t be able to use the transportation we use like automobiles that run on gasoline and planes.

      Mrs. Reimer said:

I think that we shoud stay with non-renewable sources of energy. It does not matter ,we should stay the way we are .Becouse I think that we can not live with out cars, buss or even airplanes. So it does not matter about the future.Maybe we do not have to stop using gas, oil, coal but maybe we have to stop using them often.

It’s true that life would be very hard if we didn’t have gas to make our cars, buses and airplanes go. We need to use these non-renewable sources of energy. But in 100 years all that petrol might be gone. Do you think we should start figuring out other ways to make our cars and planes go now, so that in 100 years our children can still go places?

    Damien said:

well i think we should think about the future because then we wont have to worry about the past roomers because i dont think our non-renewable sourses like coal and the others will not run out in 100, 50,200 years.

      Mrs. Reimer said:

Yes, if we plan for the future we are not surprised. Some people think non-renewable sources of energy will never run out, because they hope we will keep discovering new fossil fuels for hundreds of years. But if we learn about renewable sources of energy we will have something to use, just in case we do run out of gas and coal.

Interesting answer. How would you feel if your parents and grandparents used up all the gas, and you couldn’t go anywhere after you turned 20? Would you be glad to stay in Thunder Bay, and walk to work for the rest of your life?

      Mrs. Reimer said:

How would you feel if your parents said the same thing? ‘We have a nice house, and lots of clothes, but it doesn’t matter if Adam has a house to live in.’ If we had a debate I can tell you would be a good person to argue for using up the non-renewable resources.

    Hunter Russell said:

I think we should think about the future and forget using non-renewable resources and start using renewable resources. I think this because if we stay on the path of relying on fossil fuels we would run out, so if we don’t use fossil fuels then we can rely on the sun for energy.

That’s true. But be practical. Are you willing to stop using a car? Solar powered cars are great, but right now they are too expensive for most of us to buy. Maybe you will be the one to invent a car that can run on renewable energy that is cheap enough for all of us to buy.

I think we should stick to renewable resources, and be friendly to our earth and think about what happens next, the future! What if one day the world just decided that it doesn’t want to have any oil left? What would happen then? So, I say we should use bio mass, that way we could just plant a plant every time we cut one down.

I think we should think about the future sometimes because i don’t think that non-renewable resourses will run for ever. And we should think about the others who are going to live in this world so they could live with the things we do today unless they create a new way of powering the homes and vehicles, or maybe they just create new vehicles.

I think in the future we should try to make back up solution such as electric cars or figure out how to put and electric and engine, in the car as a back up solution so we dont use as much gasoline because they ozone layor keeps all of the gas particles in, so it keeps coming back to use so were really hurting our selves but most people dont understand that.

You are making two good points. Renewable sources of energy (like electric cars) are a good source of energy as a back up in case we run out of gasoline. But you also mention that pollution is a problem if we keep burning fossil fuels. I’m glad that you realize that just because we have fuel, it doesn’t help the environment if we burn too much.

The thing that really bugs me is how we all say that we want to think about the future so our children (if we ever have them have) have a better life, but the people who run the country are more focussed on money. If there were a way to get a renewable fuel that would make money then the country would pay for it, but nobody has came up with one and if they did the gas companies would just buy the idea and wipe it out so they wouldn’t go bankrupt.
