I’m really curious to hear what you found in the lyrics of the songs you’ve chosen! I will get the opportunity to see all the figurative language you found when I mark them, but for today, I want you to tell me what you learned. So please answer the following question and justify your thinking!!! 🙂

What is the musician/song writer trying to tell us? Use evidence from the lyrics and your own ideas to support and justify your thinking.

Remember to tell me the song title and artist.

Song-lyrics

I’ll leave you with a stanza from one of my favourite bands from my youth….

When you know that your time is close at hand,
Maybe then you’ll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion.

Song writer: Steve Harris

Do you know what he’s trying to tell us? Let me know your thinking.

  1. Thomas says:

I think that the songwriter is trying to tell us that you can” be sad for the rest of your life and that you need to move on in life. I think this because in the song, the writer says “when everything we move along” which means you have to move on in life. This proves that the writer is saying to move on in life and that you can’t be sad your entire life.
    Song: Move along
    Artist: All American Rejects

  2. Karlee says:

I think this song “Catch My Breath” by Kelly Clarkson; is about a girl had a good life, family, a lot of friends, and her love. But that girl had an embarrassing part of her, like being a waitress at a non-popular restaurant. But then everyone found out about that. On the next day she was getting bullied. I think “Catch My Breath” means remember me. “Heavy heart, now a weightless cloud” means all his love in my heart, now all of that is gone. At school she gets bullied and at home she can laugh like the line ‘Laughing hard with the windows down”
I think these lines are about your life is up and you will understand that everyone dies, and the after life is a strange illusion.

  3. Yolanda awesomeness says:

I think the songwriter is trying to tell us that you always have somebody because it says “you know you love me”. So I am guessing that he is trying to get this girl to like him so that is why he is probably singing a song called Baby. Also he says “she makes my heart, it skip’s a beat”. So this is what the songwriter is trying to tell us.
Artist is Justin Bieber and song is called Baby.

  4. tristan says:

Blue October is trying to tell us that in his song into the ocean that you should try to do any thing to get her back honestly I do not believe that you should not try to do anything to get her back but that’s just what I think. I do believe that Blue October is trying to say that you should do every thing that you can to get her back. And he’s willing to end it all to get her back. That’s just what I think.

  5. Yolanda awesomeness says:

It means he doesn’t see why so many people assume that just because someone is beautiful, they’ll also be a good person.

I think this is what strange illusion mean

  6. Thomas says:

I think the stanza means that life is a dream because I think an illusion means that it is a false belief. I think this because it says “life is an illusion” witch I think means that life is a dream with twists and turns

  7. Shaynah :P says:

The song I did is Hungry like the wolf by Duran Duran.

I think the writer is trying to tell us that you can’t make someone love you. I think this because in the text, the guy was chasing the girl, which means she probably didn’t want to be with him if he had to chase her to have her. I mean, if you loved someone and you had to chase them to have them, do you think that they love you back? I don’t think so. It’s not like they’re going to be like,
” I love you because they kidnapped me and chased me and hunted me!” Yuck! deffinatly not! So, do you think you can make someone love you?

  8. Alexis says:

I think Carrie Underwood is trying to tell us that in her song Jesus take the wheel, that sometimes in life you mess up, so instead of messing up more you can change your life. Because once you mess up it will stay with you forever.

  9. tristan says:

When you know that your time is close at hand,
Maybe then you’ll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion

I think those lyrics mean that down in the pits (where I think this takes place) life is all an illusion like a story I read were hadius or lucifer could twist your mind and make you see things that are not really there. That’s what I think anyway im proabaly really far off.

  10. trisha says:

I think the writer is trying to tell us that we should stop running from our past memories, even if we’re not proud of what happened and what we did and even though we lost our loved ones, and that we should talk it out of our system and let life go on as we live. Not Running Anymore, by Bon Jovi is trying to get a message about how you should stop holding onto your past in your memories and let them out and that you shouldn’t hold it angst your self for what happened.

  11. skyler says:

I think ride on by ac dc is about wan you bark up you have to move on and find someone else if you don’t won’t to move on if you don’t won’t to move on that is ok with me in the song it said I’m lonely.

  12. Shaynah :P says:

I think that Steve Harris is trying to tell us is that you can’t just assume things. That you can’t just say, “Oh, life is so GOOD down here.”, if you don’t truly understand life, or the challenges of life.

  13. shannon says:

The song is Jar of Hearts by Christina Perre. I think the song artist is trying to tell us if someone brakes your heart and wants you back don’t go back because they will just brake your heart again, I think this because of the works she used like don’t come back for me and I’m not your ghost anymore. I found mostly metaphor and figartive.

  14. donte says:

I think T.N.T by Ac dc is about you can’t just start fights with just because you’re angry. I know this because in the lyrics it says I’m T.N.T witch is probably means I’m angry and don’t start a fight with me or someone will get hurt Because T.N.T explodes and you explode when angry with yelling. I know if no one fought the world would be a better place. As you can see from the evidence above the song T.N.T is about you can’t start fights just because you’re angry.

  15. shannon says:

    Song writer: Steve Harris

I think he is trying to tell us to like life well we still have it because life is to short I think this because of the words he used to write that.

  16. Ethan :D says:

I think Sweet nothing by Calvin Harris is about accepting things from other people because in the song lyrics section 6 he says, “When you’re giving me such sweet nothing” it sounds like he’s accepting something from someone but there is no one there to accept it from. This shows that the author is trying to show people to accept things from others so that they will feel good and nice.

  17. Austin Boston says:

I think right round by flo rida is about that he probably likes a girl and wants to write a song about her. In section 8 it says,” We building castles that’s made out of sand She’s amazing, the fire blazing. That’s what I think the song is trying to tell us that Flo Rida really likes a girl.

  18. austin.d says:

I think the writer is trying to tell us about what the Native Americans went through to lose their land to the Europeans, because in the lyrics it says “the white man came across the sea”. Also the entire song sounds like a raid of a Native American camp or village. It also says “wasting the men” and that implies that it is a raid.

  19. kyle says:

I think that invader is about a castle about invaders that are the Vikings attacking castle and the people that defends is Nordic how I know the Vikings invade.

  20. Kraft Dinner says:

    Enter Sandman

    By: Metallica

I think the author is trying to tell us you can run but you can’t hide because in the song he says he is hiding a kid but “sandman” finds them so they have to run. Also I think this because when I hide from people no matter what eventually they will find me and I will have to run.

  21. Andrew says:

I think the writer of the song Eye of the Tiger is trying to tell us to never give up because in the song it said got guts got glory. Or it might be about a guy protecting his family because in the song it said don’t loose grip of memories from the past you must fight to keep them alive. So that just proves that he might be protecting something or someone.

  22. willimnotok says:

The song i did was called Like a rock by Bob Seger.

I think the song writter was trying to say was there was a young boy who ran away from his old town or city and now he went to a new city he decide to be a whole new person but his fears are coming back why I think this because in the song he standing there boldly and he was rough and tough as a rock.

  23. oscar says:
