Is BYOD a good policy for schools?

Posted on Updated on

BYOD

Lakehead Public Schools has recently introduced the concept of BYOD. This is where students are allowed to bring their own smart devices such as tablets, phones, and laptops. Many educators, parents, and politicians believe that students should not be allowed to bring devices that can access the Internet. They believe it is the responsibility the school to provide technology.

So the question is: Should students in grades 4 and up be able to bring their own devices to school?

Students answered this question in an exposition format below.

    BYOD

Lakehead Public schools has a policy of BYOD or bring your own device. Some people think this is a bad idea.
The first reason why it is a bad thing is that a device could access inappropriate content because kids could watch bad stuff and could get in a lot of trouble doing it. Kids could sometimes get away with it but could get in trouble with their parents.
Another argument about BYOD is cyber bullying. Kids could text bad messages to other classmates and hurt their feelings. Kids can also use swears in messages to upset them even more.
The last argument is about taking pictures or videos that are not allowed. Doing these things at school is not allowed because it is illegal to do. Kids could also expose identities of other students.
Students love BYOD, but the arguments above make it clear: Kids should not be able to BYOD to school.

Lakehead public school has recently added bring your own device (BYOD) Policy. Some parents like it and some don’t.
Firstly, student should be able to BYOD because, it cost schools less when students BYOD. You parent know how much it costs to buy laptop iPad, a cell phone, etc. you will buy one for your child$$
Secondly, students can use there device as a learning tool. Students can use their device for cacuatalar, do tasks with it more effectually, access the internet faster because they know how to use it.
Thirdly, it allows techongly to be dispearised thoughout the school. Grades 4-6 can bring their own when the grade 1-3 can’t bring their device because they are not reposible enough. They can use laptops iPads, computers.
Ok, here are some against BYOD. Firstly, kid’s devices could get stolen, damaged, loss at school. Then at first hand they will be blaming the school =. But it clearly states that the lakehead public school is not responsible for any loss, damaged, stolen devices. So bring at your own risk.
Secondly, this for parents is a BIG ONE! Phone calls children cannot answer their cell phone during school hours instead; you have to phone the school. What if you don’t know the school number? Some parents don’t have a phone book right beside them.
Lastly there is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is when two people is online and they send hateful comments to each other to lower the others self-esteem. It’s basically bullying on the internet. It can be on social media sending hateful pictures, videos, or posting hateful stuff about someone. Also, it can expose your socio economic status.
Here you can see the arguments above there is a bunch of bad stuff and good stuff but you make the decision for your child.

    BYOD

Lakehead Public Schools have recently introduced the concept of BYOD, however, many educators, parents, and politicians believe that students should be allowed to bring their devices, its their responsibility to take care of it , not the schools. The following arguments will show that this is a good policy.
Firstly, it could be good for talking notes. Typing it down on notes, could be lucky because if you spilt water on your paper note it would be ruined, and you would have to start over.
Secondly, you could use it for emergency purposes. You could call your parents from your phone if you are feeling sick. Also if you walk to school, you could call or text your parents you made it.
Thirdly you could save money for other purposes. When kids bring their devices to school it saves more money, because if they drop a school laptop the school has to pay for it.
Lastly, it can be used as a learning tool. It has calculator if you don’t have one, you could google search facts you do not know, and learn new things
Not all people agree with this but this the evidence shows why BYOD is a good thing.

BYOD stands for ‘bring your own device’ to school but many parents and politicians don’t want students to be bringing in their own device. Below are some reasons why BYOD is a good thing.

First of all, it saves the school money because when students bring in their electronics , the school doesn’t have to buy as much for ipad’s and laptops because the students bring in their own.

Second of all, kids can download free apps that can help them learn such as calculators, measuring tools and math games.

Thirdly, if a relative is trying to contact the school but the school phone isn’t working, they can call one of the students phone.

BYOD can both be a good or bad thing but I can’t make up my mind so here are three reasons on why BYOD is a bad thing. Firstly, one of the student’s devices could be stolen, damaged or lost. It would cost a lot for a new one and the school won’t replace it.

Second of all, student could reach into their desk and grab their device and start playing a game during instruction time. They’ll miss the instructions or subject.

Lastly, kids could be taking pictures or videos of others and edit their body to look weird ant then post it on Facebook.

I could not make up my decision whether students should be able to bring their electronic into school, maybe you can.

Recently, the Lakehead public schools have allowed their students to bring their own devices to school. But, some people think it’s a bad thing. But some people think it’s a good thing. Here is some evidence to prove that the policy of byod is a good thing for students.
First off, students can bring in devices that they are familiar with. If the computers that the school provides are causing kids to struggle, then they can pull out their device to do their work on.
Secondly, when kids byod it costs schools less. The school won’t have to spend money for technology for the older kids. Because, they have their own devices.
Also, kids can use their devices as learning tools. If there were no more laptops, or they needed to research something, they could just get there device out.
Lastly, what if there was an emergency back home? It’s important for kids to keep in touch with their parents, even when they are not at home.
So, some people think that byod is a bad thing, when really it’s a good thing. I hope this evidence proves that byod is good for students.

Lake head Public Schools are now allowing BYOD or ‘’bring your own device’’. Some people think it’s a bad thing because kids could go on the internet and something inappropriate can pop up but it’s not bad at all.
However, I think it’s a great thing because, it cost schools less money when kids bring their own device also, you can use it for a learning tool like for a dictionary, calculator, notes or a stopwatch.
Thirdly, if your hurt or you have a problem like bullying you can call your family, text them, or face time them. If you left something at your house you can call use your device to call someone.
Lastly, make sure you know how to use it. Students are better working with their own device than the schools device with which they aren’t familiar with.
Even though some people don’t like the idea of BYOD, the arguments above prove otherwise.

    BRING BACK THE DEVICES!

Lakehead Public Schools have recently introduced BYOD, or bring your own device. Many politicians, educators, and parents think that BYOD is a bad thing and should be stopped. But on the other hand, many other groups of people (one being the students) think that BYOD should be continued for the following reasons.
BYOD should be acknowledged mainly because it allows better use of the schools technology to be used throughout the building. The younger grades, 1-3, are not able or allowed to bring their devices to school. When grades 4-6 bring their own devices, it allows those younger grades to use the technology without having to fight over the laptop cart.
Also, students are familiar with their device more than others. If a student owns an Apple device and the school suddenly throws a PC or a Samsung at them, more than likely they’ll have no idea how to work it. This will also allow students to work faster and more effectively than they would on an electronic device that they have no idea how to use.
Another reason why BYOD should be continued is because the school can spend less money on technology. A laptop costs so much money, think about it! A brand new MacBook Pro can cost up to $2000! The school doesn’t have that kind of money to throw away when they have the opportunity to let kids bring their own devices. Schools can put that money towards other things, for example, field trips, Kingfisher, schools supplies, and lunches for the students who can’t afford one.
Finally, students are able to contact their parents or guardians during an emergency situation. On a form that students signed at the beginning of the year, it specified that students will not be allowed to use their devices during lockdown situations. Snow storms, flooding, or a fire, in other words, situations where the school be closed and students will be sent home are the times where the kids will have to use some type of technology to contact their parents. It will be easier because basically every device has either, texting, calling, or emailing so that there is not a huge line to use the office phone, and the school will be able to send home more students in less time.
As you can see from the arguments above, BYOD is an amazing opportunity for the students and the school board. It should be continued with full force.

Lakehead public schools introduced BYOD and some people don’t like it. The policy of BYOD is a good though.

The first reason is your familiar with your device and knows how to use it. My evidence is if the school gives you something to work like an ipad and you don’t know how to use it you could bring in your own device.

Another reason is it cost the school less money when kids BYOD. If something breaks like a laptop and some kids don’t BYOD then the school has to buy more laptops for the kids.

Thirdly, it gives the younger grades more time on the computers. BYOD is a good thing because it gives the younger grades more time on the computers.

Lastly, you could use it as a learning tool. You could use your device as a calculator or a dictionary if you don’t have them.

As you can see from the arguments about, BYOD is a good thing.

What do you think about BYOD?

Lakehead public schools has started BYOD, which is when students can bring their own technology. Some people don’t agree, but others do. below are arguments for and against BYOD.
BYOD allows the better use of technology to dispersed throughout the school year. If the older kids in grade 6 bring there own technology there will be laptops left for grade threes.
Use as a learning tool. For math if you need a calculated or a Dictionary.
Emergency purpose. If there is a lock down and someone Gets hurt.
Could get lost, or broken, stolen. If your friend is jealous they can steel it and break it.
Cyber bulling if you are on Facebook or something someone can send you a bad text.
Texting, talking picture, videos. Texting your friends in a different class room.
What do you think about BYOD?

Why is BYOD a Good Idea?
Lakehead Public Schools have recently stated that students should be allowed to bring their devices to school for educational purposes. However, BYOD is a good idea for many reasons.
One of the reasons that BYOD or bring your own device is a good idea is that it costs less money for the school if students bring their own devices to school. This is because when teachers and staff have to provide a certain amount of devices for students to use, it often costs a large amount of money to provide enough devices for the schools need. For example, the cost of one iPad is about $400. If the school provided 30 iPads for students, that’s already $120 spent on iPads alone! Then you end up needing laptops for the school. One laptop could end up being up to the cost of even $1000. If you were to buy 14 laptops and 30 iPads, your cost altogether would be around $14 120! However, if students were to bring their OWN devices, it would cost the school a lot less.
Another reason why BYOD is a good idea is because there would be equality in the school. Students under grade 4 are not able to bring their own devices to school. However, the school doesn’t supply enough technology do to the outrageous costs. So if the students in grade 4, 5 and 6 have devices available, it would leave more devices for the younger grades in the school.
The next reason why BYOD is a good idea is because students are more familiar with the devices that they most likely use every day. If kids bring their own devices to school, it would make it easier to learn with. Yes, it takes lots of responsibility, but as kids move into the higher grades such as 4, 5, and 6, they become more mature and aware of their surroundings. Right?
The final argument is that they can be useful for learning and education. If students have their own devices with them, it would be easier to look up information on your own device because it’s always with you. Yes, you could run into inappropriate information on your device, but can’t you do the same on a school device?
Overall, Lakehead Public Schools should allow BYOD in school because it makes perfect sense.

    In The Middle
Lakehead Public Schools have recently introduced BYOD throughout the Thunder Bay Public Schools. Teachers, Politicians, and parents think BYOD is a good thing and a bad thing. Let’s hear from both arguments.
BYOD should be allowed in schools from multiple reasons. Some students are only familiar with their own device, some can use their device as a learning tool, and costs the school less money.
Firstly, when students are familiar with their own device, nobody wants them to stop using their own device and move onto a device they don’t know how to work! If there’s a device students know how to use, hands down, their own device. Whether it’s a laptop, an iPad, or even a Samsung or iPhone, it’s the students device. Nobody can tell a student that they don’t know how to use THEIR OWN device that they’re familiar with.
Secondly, student can use their device as a learning tool. They can use it for History/Social Studies; looking up facts, information, etc., and as a book if there’s no book in their class that they enjoy, why not look at a book on your device!? Also, the can use their device as a calculator for math, chances are nobody needs to use a calculator on their device because schools supply calculators, but it doesn’t hurt to mention it!
Finally, when students are able to bring their device, schools don’t have to pay for more devices to last a class or two. Let’s just say a school pays for 30 iPads and 14 laptops, one laptop is $1000 dollars and an iPad is $400 dollars. 400 x 30 is a total of $14000, and 1000 x 14 is a total of $12000, $12000 + $14000 is a total of $26000 altogether! That’s a lot of money for the school to pay.
The arguments for BYOD above are acceptable, right? Now it’s time for the arguments against BYOD.
Firstly, cyberbullying is a major problem! Whether it is people cyberbullying across the city or across a classroom, cyberbullies are able to contact anyone. When bullies aren’t able to bully face-to-face, they bully online. It’s a major thing when it happens at school, you’re away from your parents and people believe schools can’t do anything because it’s anonymous. Yes, this may happen at home, but this can also happen at school.
Secondly, videos and pictures can be taken without permission and turned to something way out of contact! Photoshop is used a lot! Someone even made a pizza to be a girl! Anyways, pictures can be put onto the internet and once photos are on the internet, it’s on there forever.
Lastly, students can also be played during instructional time. Focusing on games instead of school work will lower grades, and lack in knowledge of things that can be useful in life. Also, if you’re caught playing games instead of working, you can get in really big trouble…
In conclusion, from the arguments above, which side are you on? Are you sticking with what you still believe? Everyone has their own opinion!

Why is BYOD a good idea?
The Lakehead Public School Board has introduced this thing called BYOD. Some people agree and some people don’t.
I agree with BYOD because it costs schools less when kids BYOD because schools don’t have to pay for more things for each student and if a student has their own device then they can use that instead of using up one of the iPad’s, Laptops, Computers, they can use their own device so there is more for younger grades (grades 3 and under can not have their own device at school.)

Next there are emergency purposes. If an emergency occurs at school and if you have your phone then someone can contact you or you can contact them.

Lastly you can use your device as a learning tool because it’s a faster way to access things like calculator, dictionary and research websites like Google and Google Images. You also need to know how to use your device then you know how to access websites and a lot more things properly and faster.

The policy of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is a good thing because of all these uses for a student to have their own device with them so they can have a faster access to the internet for research and the calculator, emergency purposes you can contact someone or they can contact you. It also saves a lot more computers, laptops and iPads for the younger grades because grades 3 and under cannot bring their own device

My first reason is it allows better use of technology. Now technology can be dispersed throughout the school. Grade 3 and under can’t bring their own device because they are not responsible. But 4-6 are, allowing the younger students to use the laptops.
Another reason is that it will cost the school less money. Instead of buying more ipads , laptops, computers.they can rely on students to bring theirs
A third reason is that we can use it as a learning tool. Like the caculatar, dictionary.
And finally, students are familiar with their own devices. Therefore, they can use it more better than the younger kids
In conclusion, I think BYOD is a good thing.

    Accessing internet.

BYOD is when they use the bring devices to school can be use for work.

It costs the school less because it’s good for kids and the school.

Use as leaning tool because it can be use for math and it good for kid.

Allow the better use because it’s good for kids and for schools.

Lakehead public schools have recently introduced byod. Some parents, educators and politicians believe that kids should not be able to bring their own device to school. I will show three reasons for each idea about byod.
First off if kids do not know how to use the laptops they can use their own device because they know how to use it.
Next if kids byod since the younger grades can’t byod can’t byod because they might lose it so the older grades can byod while the younger kids use laptops.
Another reason byod is a good thing is that it costs less money for schools to pay for technology.
One reason byod is bad is that the device could get lost, stolen or damaged.
Also, not everyone is responsible enough to have their device at school.
Lastly students can take pictures and videos and if their not supposed to they can get in trouble.
In conclusion byod can be bad and good.

The policy of BYOD is a good thing. One thing is that it’s good for a learning tool like a book, a dictionary and more.

Second some kids are familiar with their devices and they don’t know how to use the schools. Did you know that a device is like a pet and like a pet it’s your responsibility?

Lastly incise of emergency we can call 911 or the firefighters.

    ON THE FENCE.
Lakehead public schools have recently added BYOD to our schools. However, some people [such as politicians, teachers, and parents] think that this is a bad idea.
A good thing about BYOD is that it allows better use of technology throughout the school. The school has to buy all of the technology for the school. However, if two classes need technology they would have to fight over it. If students bring their own devices, less people will need technology, allowing better use of technology throughout the school.
Also, you are familiar with your own device. Say, somebody tells you to write a report. But the device they give you is unfamiliar. You would be more productive on your own device, then with an unfamiliar one.
A third reason why BYOD is a good thing is that you could use it as a learning tool. First of all, you have safari. Secondly, lots of people have learning apps, such as pages.
On the other hand, BYOD could definitely be a bad thing. One of the worst things about BYOD is that it exposes socio-economic status. St.James has always been pretty good about bullying. Not much of it happens here. But if we bring BYOD to our schools, it could bring a whole new type of bulling to our schools. Socio-economic status is one of the biggest problems in bullying at the moment. If we allow BYOD into our school, socio-economic status could become a problem.
Another reason why BYOD is a bad idea is that people are not always responsible. You could lose, or break your device. Say, you lost your device and you can’t find it. You might claim that somebody stole it. Then we would have to have the cops come in to find out who stole it, and it would just be a disaster.
Lastly, BYOD could be a bad thing because students have access to taking photos pictures and videos of people and the school without permission. If they take these photos or videos, they have access to posting them on Facebook, twitter, google, etc. Plus, sometimes people don’t want their picture taken.
In conclusion, BYOD could be both a good and bad thing. Everybody has their own opinion.

The policy of byod in not a good thing

Adults or kids can cyber bully people and kids get cyber bullied online, texting etc.

Could access inappropriate content such as your pictures, other people, your family.

Could get stolen, damaged, lost, etc. If your phone or tablet gets damaged its not anyone else responsibility.

No playing games during instructional time or your device be taken away for the rest of the day and that’s when you get your device back.

For these reasons byod is not a good thing because kids could steal your device and look at inappropriate content.
