The Wretched Stone by Chris Van Allsburg

This great book poses more questions than it answers! The question I want you to try and answer is: What could the “Wretched Stone” be a symbol of or represent in our everyday lives? Supply evidence from the text and justify that evidence with your own ideas.

I look forward to reading your ideas.

The wretched stone represent T.V. in today’s society.
T.V. flashes and the stone were flashing too. The apes were addicted to the flashing stone and in real life people are addicted to the flashing T.V.
The apes couldn’t stop staring at the stone. People can’t stop staring stop staring at the T.V. and in the text the apes can’t stop staring at the T.V.
When you watch T.V. every day you change and those sailors change in to apes. People start acting different and those apes were acting different.

I believe the wretched stone is a TV because
The apes sit around all day looking at the stone just like we stare at the TV. They stare at the stone for hours we watch the TV for hours. The ape’s changed back to human but some of them like banana now. The rock is cursed

You start well when saying it is a symbol of a TV, but what does the crew changing back to humans and liking bananas have to do with the stone being a TV?

    The Wretched Stone

I think the Wretched Stone is a IPhone because people sit around all day and text and don’t pay attention to the real world. This shows that just like the stone the iPhone is very addicting to look at. A iPhone has smooth glass and a nice screen to play on. The rock is just the same with the surface as smooth as glass and that tells us that the humans and apes like the glassy surface.

I like your first argument, but do we really like glassy surfaces? And do apes?

    The Wretched Stone
I think The Wretched Stone is a symbol of T.V I think this because in the text the sailors watch the stone for a long time. Also when most people get home they watch T.V.
Also because when the lightning came the stone stopped working and they were sad. Because when lightning hits the T.V it stops working and the power goes off.
    People watch T.V to much.

I think that The Wretched Stone is like a laptop or a phone. I think this because the crew just can’t stop staring at the stone. This tells us that the stone must have been really interesting to look at. I also think that it is like a laptop or phone because the crew turned into monkeys and sometimes that is what we get like when we are watching t.v. or a movie and sometimes it is not smart.

    The Wretched Stone
I think The Wretched Stone is a T.V. because it looked like the stone was flashing and sometimes the T.V. flashes if people mess around with it.
Also because the other sailors/apes couldn’t stop staring at the stone just like some people can’t stop staring at the T.V. because maybe the T.V. Show can be too addicting.

    The wretched stone
I think the wretched Stone is a computer because the crew were down in the bottom of the ship and they were down there forever. And because people sit around computers all day. And in the book the ship gets struck by lightning and the rock/stone stopped working. And if a computer got struck in real life it would stop working right away.

I think the Wretched stone represents a i pad (or other piece of tech) Some evidence I have are the fact that most human beings sit around on hours on end. The crew did the same thing with the stone. My final piece
Of evidence is that during the crew’s time as a monkey they acted like brainless creatures (at the beginning) sometimes we act pretty brainless when on our tech. Those are my reasons why I think the Wretched stone represents a I pad or other tech.

I think the wretched stone is a tv. I think this because the book they say it feels like glass and is smooth and gives off light then one side is big bulky and grey just like a tv. The crew was addicted to just staring at it just like people are lazy and watch tv all day. The box turned them into apes. Tv makes us act like apes and be lazy, slobs, slow, and stupid when we watch too much tv.

I keep coming to the same question. Why do you think Chris Van Allsburg had the crew turn into apes? How does this idea relate to the stone representing a TV?

I think the Wretched Stone is a T.V. I think this because the sailors sit in front of the stone all day and we sit in front of the T.V a lot. Also the stone is smooth on one side and not on the other side and old T.Vs are smooth on one side and not on the other. The last piece of evidence is that the sailors turned into apes and when we watch T.V we don’t think that much. 

I think the wretched stone in our society represents a type of flag. Because there’s flags on the ship. This tells us there are flags on the ship so maybe it represents a type of flag. Sometimes people have symbols on There ship or on There sail/flag. This shows that maybe is can be a type of flag on the boat. 

The only problem with this idea is we rarely if at all sit around and stare at a flag for hours at a time!

    The Wretched Stone
I think the wretched stone is a symbol of electronics because everyone is always looking at their electronics and the men boat wouldn’t stop looking at the rock like people with their devices.
When our electronics die sometimes people get mad so maybe when the rock stopped glowing that’s when it died so the men got mad and turned into apes.

Good thinking, but they were apes before the stone stopped working!

    The Wretched Stone

I think the stone is a computer/PC or some kind of device that we are lazy enough to look at it every single day like the crew looking at a stone 24 hours a day.
With a computer, we can install all sorts of different types of building programs. We can download some type of building program for PC’s. Then use a human template, and turn it into an ape. This can show that we can be amazing builders. This can also show we are lazy like animals.
People who have a computer or a gaming computer with a builder program or an addicting game can get lost into it. Honestly this proves that us people can easily get lost into devices, and computers.

Jayden you have some great arguments here, but it is a bit disjointed and doesn’t stay on topic!

I think the Wretched Stone is a computer (TV, phones and IPad’s). I think this because people in this world like to stare at their computers when playing on them, and they do not pay attention to any thing around them. Sometimes I like to play on the computer. Another reason is that TV’s are meant to be looked at. And they entertain the people. Also all the people on the boat/ the crew were looking dead eye on the Wretched Stone.

    THE WRETCHED STONE
I think the Wretched Stone is a T.V or some kind of device because we sit around all day like animals like apes like the crew did. Another reason I think the Wretched Stone is a T.V is because the rock gave off a glow and Televisions also give off a glow. Also the stone was smooth and flat on one side like a flat screen T.V. This also shows that every human in the world is lazy and more and more people are staying home watching T.V instead of getting outside or even having a job. People get addicted to watching T.V or playing games on devices and get lost in the show or game they are watching or playing for hours and hours and never want to come out. If somebody asks you to do something you won’t do it because of your T.V or device like the crew didn’t listen to the captain and just sat there like animals.

    The Wretched stone
I think the Wretched stone is a symbol of bad luck because in the story the men on board turned into apes and that shows us that’s not normal. And in the story a storm and big waves came out of no where and that shows us that its bad luck because waves and storms don’t just come out of no where.

      Mr. Purdon responded:
      November 6, 2015 at 12:14 pm

But why do they sit and stare at it all day? Why did it make them turn into apes?
