The Wretched Stone

This great book poses more questions than it answers! The question I want you to try and answer is: What could the “Wretched Stone” be a symbol of, or represent in our everyday lives? Supply evidence from the text and justify that evidence with your own ideas.

I look forward to reading your ideas.

The stone seems to represent a TV. I know this because in the text the stone has a weird glow and because its heavy and also because the lightning knocks out the power of the stone. That proves it represents a TV because a TV is heavy and because TV’s turn off when lightning strikes your house and also the screen of a TV has a weird glow.

  2. kenyon says:

The stone seems to represent a tv. I know this because in the text.

All the people what to do is sit around the stone and look at it.

Smooth on one side and hard on the other side.

When the lighting hit the bout the stones light went out.

  3. Michael says:

The stone seems to represent a T.V. I know this because in the text the stone was a 2 ft rectangle and one side was as smooth as glass. The stone has a faint glow like a T.V. It is heavy like a box T.V. the crew only wants to watch the stone.

  4. ian says:

The stone represents a TV I know this because in the text it said the stone has a smooth front and a bumpy back ,2ft rectangle, feint glow, heavy, the crew only wants to watch the stone, behavior change, the lighting took out the power, And when they turned into monkey there kind of like a couch potato.

  5. riley says:

I think the stone represents a tv.

I know this because in the text. They describe the stone as 2ft. rectangle shape and on one side they describe it as one having glass. The crew also gets addicted to the stone like someone would with a tv. They only want to watch the stone. The crew also turns into monkey like couch potatoes just sitting around.

So that is why I think the stone represents a tv.

  6. claire says:

The wretched stone represents a television i know this because…Its a two foot long rectangle that’s flat it also has a faint glow like a television and i makes people very lazy so the author and i both believe that televisions brain wash you so if every one didn’t have televisions the world would be more active.

  7. Jon says:

The stone seems to present a television. I think because in the text it says its heavy, its shaped like a rectangle, the crew only wanted to stare at it in silence, it’s addicting, it has a faint glow, when lighting strikes it shut off. That’s my proof…. 🙂

  8. nicholas says:

The stone represents a tv. I know this because it’s a tv shape. It loses its glow when struck by lightning gust like a tv would.

  9. Danica says:

The story was meaning to represent TV because lately kids have been doing everything to watch TV and kids scream just to get on tv. Tv is now known to change you and make you very violent, and if you watch it you can get pink eye. Also, if you’re watching a violent show, it can reflect off your life because a tv is basically a role-model. I think parents need to also watch what kids are watching, now a days.

  10. brennan says:

the stone seems to represent a TV or a screen i know this because in the text it was havey and 2Ft rectangle shape and starts to show light and every time the lighting strikes the TV or screen gos out.

  11. mya says:

I think the retched stone is supposed to represent a TV in today’s society because it says that the stone was glowing, and it was heavy, smooth, and the crew is hypnotized from the rock like we are with the tv. I know this because in the text it said “there is a mysterious glow coming from the rock” said the captain.
The crew was not listening to their captain, not wanting to work, and very very lazy.

  12. Jack says:

In the story of The Wretched Stone, I believe the stone represents a TV.

I think this because, the stone is described as 2ft tall, has rough edges, and one side that’s as flat as glass. The stone has a faint glow on the flat side of it. It is heavy, like a tv, and the crewmembers just sit there as if they were couch potatoes. And lastly, when lightning hit the ship the stone stopped glowing as if it had short-circuited.

These are my reasons why I believe the stone represents a TV.

  13. rj says:

It was a T.V of some sort and the stone turned off because of the lighting and turned the crew to monkeys and they acted weird and they never looked away from the stone which is similar to people watching T.V.

  14. summer says:

    THE WRECHED STONE
The stone seems to represent a TV.
I know this because it gives off a faint glow and the crew seem to just want to get everything done then get back to the TV/stone. They turn to monkeys, monkeys don’t understand the human language like if you watch too much TV your communication can be scrambled. It was in the shape of a 2 foot long box, and the crew always wanted to finish all of the work so they can get to the rock.

  15. Jaylin says:

I think the wretched stone represents a TV. I think this because in the text it says, “it tokes seven strong men to lift the stone.”. As in it was heavier than a regular stone, the stone is 2 by 2 ft. long. The stone manly has a ruff texture, except for one side, which has a flat, glosses surface that feels like a glass. The flat side of the stone gives off a strange glow, which somehow mesmerizes the sailors. Later, in the book it tells us that the stone addicted sailors have turned in to lazy apes, which I would relate to as couch potatoes. The book says the men that knew how to read removed from the “ape stage” the quickest, I think the reason behind this is, reading. Reading is another form of entertainment like, TV. The only deferens is that TV doesn’t require you to use your imagination, and to see visions in your mind because the pictures are already there. When reading, you only have words to work with. Finally, at the end of the book the sailors grow a strange liking towards bananas, which I think the author is referring to the internet, and our television. These are the reasons I think the rock in ‘The Wretched Stone’ is a TV.

  16. Teagan says:

    The Retched Stone

the stone seems to represent a T.V. in the text, it said that the stone is 2 ft. long and 2 ft. wide in a rectangle shape. It also said in the text that the stone had a faint glow. like most stones this stone had rough sides, but one of the sides on this strange stone was completely flat. this odd stone was also very heavy.

like other people, the crew would stare at the stone for as long as they could and whenever they could.I think that when the crew had turned into ape’s, it represented how people act around and when watching T.V.

T.V. is something that you could say “brain washes” you. When you watch T.V. you don’t have to think, it just shows you everything. This is not like sleeping. sleeping is where your brain recharges, watching T.V. turns your brain off. You don’t realize whats going on around you. What i am getting at here is that in the book, when the crew turned into ape’s after starring at the “stone” they acted a lot like how a human would when watching a T.V. which is even more proof that this “stone” was a T.V.
